INSTALLATION IN PROGRESS IN THE ROYAL APARTMENT UNTIL SPRING 2022: THE PORCELAIN CABINET OF
THE MUSEO E REAL BOSCO DI CAPODIMONTE
Capodimonte is home to approximately 6,000 ceramics and works in porcelain,
making the museum home to one of the most important such collections in
Europe. Most of the objects come from the Bourbon Collection, which was later
enriched by purchases and gifts after the unification of Italy in 1861.
Our current installation of the Cabinet’s ten rooms intends to revive the
ambitious project of Annibale Sacco, director of the Royal House of Savoy.
Beginning in 1872, Sacco, on behalf of the king, reassembled a large collection of
porcelain and ceramics that had belonged to the Bourbon family and had been
dispersed across various royal sites.
The porcelain, which Sacco did not distribute across various rooms of the palace
as mere furnishings, will be exhibited in dedicated thematic rooms, increasing
the number of works on view and better showcasing the diversity and breadth of
our collections.
Among the themed rooms are those dedicated to the European manufactures of
Meissen, Sèvres, Vienna, Berlin, Naples, and Capodimonte, linking the palace to
the porcelain manufactory Charles of Bourbon commissioned in Naples.
The collection includes important porcelain acquired by the Bourbon Court
through prestigious gifts or royal purchases, such as those brought to Naples by
the wife of King Ferdinand IV, Maria Carolina of Austria, from Vienna, or those
donated by the Hapsburg imperial court of Berlin, including porcelain from
Sèvres and Dagoty, and even English terracotta. Additionally, approximately
600 works in the collection were made by the Neapolitan manufactures of Del
Vecchio and Giustiniani as well as the Sicilian Baron Giuseppe Malvica.
This project is led by Federico Forquet.
